How To Make Croque Monsieur Mac and Cheese
- ½ pound of ziti
- 3 slices of white sandwich bread, dice them roughly
- 8 ounces of thin sliced deli boiled ham
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese
- 4 ounces of gruyere cheese, grate them coarsely
- 2 cups of milk
- 1/8 teaspoon of fresh grated nutmeg
- 3 tablespoons of all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, prepare some more for the dish greasing
- Kosher salt
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 clove of garlic, mince it
- 1 medium of onion, mince it
1Pre heat your oven to 425° Fahrenheit. Take a large pan and boil salted water in it. When it is boiled, add the ziti and cook it until it is al dente. It should take around 6 minutes. When the ziti is al dente, drain it and put it into a large bowl. Add ¼ cup of the milk and toss it evenly. Set aside.
2Al dente is the best texture to serve pasta. It is no longer crispy on the outside. It is cooked on the outside and it tastes firm, yet it has rather uncooked texture on the inside. For ziti, you should be able to cut it in half and it still feels firm, not soft.
3Cooking direction on the package should tell you the time needed to cook it but it is often inaccurate. It is recommended to taste your ziti every once in a while so you are sure it is not over cooked. Take a medium bowl and toss in both cheeses in it. Set aside.
4Take another medium bowl. Beat the eggs and ¼ cup of the milk in it. Then, add the bread and half of the cheese mixture. Set aside. Take a saucepan and heat it over high heat. Add butter and let it melts. Then, add the garlic and onion. Stir often and cook until it gets brown.
5Next, add nutmeg, cayenne, flour, and Kosher salt in the saucepan and stir. Cook it for around 2 minutes. Add ¾ cup of water slowly and add the remaining 1 ½ cup of the milk. Bring it to boil and stir until it thickens.
6Remove the heat and stir the mixture to cool. When it gets cool a little bit, add the remaining cheese mixture and the ziti. Toss them evenly.
Take a shallow casserole dish and butter it. When you are ready, add half of the ziti in it and top it with some of the ham. Cover it with the pasta again, and top it with the ham once again.
7Last, cover the top layer with the bread mixture. Bake for around 20 minutes or until it gets golden brown and bubbly. Make sure you check on it before it gets over cooked.
8Rest it for a few minutes then serve. It is great to serve warm and it is still great to serve cold.
